Care Guide

Under Construction

Each Crested and Gargoyle Gecko has their own personality.  Handleability is never guaranteed.  Some never enjoy being handled and are happier when left alone.  Some will climb out and chill while you clean their enclosures.  They can be easily stressed, and if stressed enough, they will drop their tails.  Tails on Crested Geckos do NOT regenerate.  Gargoyle tails can and will regenerate, but never look the same.  Below is a care guide from day 1!  Enjoy!

When you first bring your baby home, the urge to hold and start bonding right away is overwhelming.  However, for the well being of your baby, allow at least a week for your baby to decompress and get used to it's new home.  Babies should be kept in a "shoebox" size enclosure with safe decor, plants for hiding, and ledges or vines for climbing.  The best substrate for the first month is paper towels or napkins.  This allows you to monitor poop to ensure that your baby is eating.  Too large of an enclosure can be overwhelming to a small baby and they can have trouble finding food.  A "shoebox" size allows your baby to have freedom, but not be terrified.  Replace the napkins or paper towels as needed, and most definitely weekly. We suggest multiple feeding locations within the box until you know for certain that your baby is eating.

Tail dropping can happen at almost any time for almost any reason.  Seriously.  A loud noise, wind blowing the wrong way, or they just feel like it.  Generally, extreme stress can cause tail drops, but we've had geckos shipped in and they are perfectly fine.  We never guarantee that a gecko WON'T ever drop their tail.  If they do, remain calm.  Make sure that the gecko is on paper towel substrate and keep the cage clean.  It will heal and the gecko will move on.  Crested geckos in the wild never keep their tails very long.  It's a defense mechanism to avoid being eaten.  The tail drops and the predator goes for the wiggling tail allowing the gecko time to run away.

Misting is essential, even with a water bowl.  We mist as needed; which means at times, it's twice a day.  Sometimes, it's once daily or every-other day.  The key is not to have a pool at the bottom of the enclosure.  Mist the walls and ceiling.  Allow drops to get to the bottom, but also make sure your Gecko has a dry out time.  They are NOT amphibians that require a very wet environment.  Wet environments can cause tail rot, mouth rot, respiratory infections and other health concerns.

We feed Pangea Growth and Breeding formula and mix it with a fruit flavor.  Watermelon is a huge favorite as is Fig and Insect.  They all seem less enthused with the Papaya and Apricot.  For babies, we use silicone bottle caps.  First feedings is a shallow coating so that I can track lick marks and know that it's being eaten.  We provide a bottle cap of water at all times for babies and water bowls full at all times for ALL our Geckos.  For babies, check food daily.  Replace any uneaten food every other day, especially in the summer when mold can grow quickly.

Geckos do not handle extreme temperatures for an extended period.  Anything above 82 degrees for an extended time can kill your Gecko.  Anything colder than 62 can also have consequences.  For Adult Geckos housed in Exo Terra type terrariums and in very cold rooms, we recommend Pangea Deep Heat Projectors.  They must be used with a thermostat and should be placed on one side of the enclosure.

Your new friend is mainly nocturnal and will be most active at night.  Many owners choose to install cameras in their enclosures to watch their antics at night.  I recommend Wyze Cam v3 from Amazon, if you choose to install any cameras.

We do NOT recommend that you house 2 Geckos together, and NEVER house 2 males together.  This can cause stress, fighting, injury and even death.  Geckos are mainly solitary, and come together for breeding purposes.  IF you feel the need to cohabitate your animals, please note that your Geckos can die.  That being said, a size of 10-15 gallons per Gecko is needed.  You will also need multiple ledges, multiple feeding locations, multiple hides and enough space for them to escape each other if they want to.
